At last, after two years of pandemic, this Easter 2022 it’s going to be like it always has been.

In Gata, these days have always been the favorites by its people. The terraces are filled with friends, the bakeries smell like “monas”, the Plaza de España is filled with tourists in search of wicker baskets and local crafts, the artisanal ice cream shop opens after the winter and the parks are filled with children playing and enjoying their vacations.

Things to do if you come to spend a day in Gata?

  • Buy an Easter’s “Pà Socarrat”

The bakeries have been preparing them for days and you better go soon because, you may run out of yours!

This delicacy is a sweet bread that is covered in sugar. Its ingredients are flour, eggs, sugar, milk and yeast and the preparation requires a lot of care and patience. The result is a bread that you can eat both with a few ounces of chocolate or dipped in coffee, milk or whatever you like.

  • Take home a typical wicker bag or basket.

When you arrive to Plaza de España, you immediately will see why Gata is famous for. Their wicker shops make the tradition to keep alive in here and it continues to attract thousands of tourists every year.

You will find bags, rugs, lamps, furniture and all types of decoration for your home, most of them made of wicker so, you will take something home for sure!

  • Lunch time!

In Gata, if there is something we have, are bars and restaurants. For lunch (or dinner) you will find lots of options. You can try the typical tapas accompanied by some beers, to have a rice or a paella or if you prefer, meat of fish.

  • Have an artisanal ice-cream in Ca El Tramusser.

The beginnings of the artisan ice cream date back to the 1920s. Every year, on Easter  it opens again to the delight of the entire town. Its specialty is the “Agua-limon” and its artisan ice creams, made with ancestral recipes.

 

  • Have a walk around the Old Town and to the Gorgos river.

While you are enjoying your ice-cream, you can take a walk around Gata streets. You will always find people chatting, sitting on a terrace or childrens playing in the park. The Church is just a few steps away and also the river that cross the town and have the town’s name. It’s usually empty but sometime, when it rains a lot during the winter, the river goes down with water and it’s a spectacle for everyone!

If you keep walking, you can go down and walk by its side. You will find beautiful walks surrounded by nature and easily accessible for the whole family.

  • To buy a hat.

To end up the day, What’s better than to buy the most traditional article of the town? Gata it’s known because of its local artisanal and factories of hats and baskets that nowadays export worldwide.

Some of the hat factories have a local shop as well so you can not miss visiting one of them and buy this essential accessory.
