In Gata, A typical thing is the Gorgos River.

If you want to spend a different day, surrounded by nature and without leaving the town, you cannot miss this charming walk along the Gorgos River, a very cool plan for a fun morning.

THE GORGOS RIVER

The Gorgos River rises at an altitude of 1,300 meters in the Sierra de Alfaro and the Serrella in Facheca. Most of the year it remains dry and you can see its spectacular silhouette of rocks but occasionally, when it rains a lot on some winter days, it comes down loaded with water and is quite a sight for the residents of the town.

Years ago, this was the place chosen by the children of the town to play. Jumping over rocks and puddles, playing hide-and-seek, climbing… so it holds many beautiful memories for many of today’s adults.

It has a walk of almost two kilometers along which you can walk parallel to the river and where you will find several parks and benches to sit down.

This is our plan!

First of all, it’s time to fill the basket with everything you need for lunch. We will pass by some of the town’s bakeries such as Dulcipan, Forn Xaro, Panadería Andrés or Pastisseria La Pau. Here we will buy the bread or some coca for lunch time.

After this, we will have to fill the “bocadillos” that we have bought and what better than a good sausage from the area such as a “sobrasada”? For the best “embutido”, Carnicería Silvestra, Ca Peixet, Ca curro or Carnisseria Polaca.

At Ca La Datilera, we will buy fresh fruit and water for the whole day.

Do you have sunscreen and hat? If yes, we are ready to go down to the river.

[If not, Gata is the cradle of hat factories. We have 10 of them so don’t miss the opportunity to buy the summer accessory here!

For sun cream, very important throughout the year and much more so in summer, you have 3 pharmacies in Gata (Farmacia Elvira Berenguer, Farmacia Mª Elena and Farmacia Tormo Soler) and a drugstore called Donam.]

GOING DOWN TO THE GORGOS RIVER

To go down, there are several options. It could be along C/Penyó, where in the middle of the street you will see an esplanade that will take you directly to the river walk. You will also find another descent in the middle of C/Teulada and where you will find the park when you go down.

If you go down the Penyó Street, you can walk while you contemplate the river on your right. Straight ahead you will find the park with tables and benches to sit on. If you go with children, they have several swings and slides where they will be entertained for a long time.

There are also paths to go down to the river and explore for a while, but always be very careful! Sometimes the stones can be a bit slippery.

Here you will not find cars or noise, just the river and the trees. You can sit on the lawn to read, chat with your companions, prepare a picnic while listening to music… Today is a day to relax!

Once the picnic is set up, it’s time to eat all the delicious things that we have bought in Gata and when we finish, collect everything so that the next ones who come will also find it clean and can enjoy a day of nature in the town.

After lunch, you can make the route along the walk to the other end of the river. You will have to go up C/ Penyó again, cross the bridge at the top and follow the route of the walk again.

The views of the bridge and the river from below are priceless.

What do you think of this plan? Do you sign up for a walk along the river + picnic in Gata?
