In Gata, going hiking is what we do best.
Our town is surrounded by mountains, nature, and trails that invite you to get lost in its landscapes. This makes it an ideal destination for outdoor lovers and hikers, with routes for every level: from easy walks suitable for the whole family to more challenging itineraries for those seeking a real adventure.
Today we suggest a simple and charming route that you can do on foot or by bike: Font de la Mata.
Font de la Mata: history and nature
About 3 km from Gata’s center is Font de la Mata, an ancient Arab-built well used to irrigate the fields. Among the rocks grow some impressive mastic trees, possibly the oldest on the Iberian Peninsula. A true natural treasure that combines history and scenery.
Along the way, you’ll also encounter an old farmhouse with a 19th-century cistern, more than 11 meters long, with arches on each side that reflect the architecture of that era.
And it’s not just the views: along the trail you’ll find aromatic plants such as laurel, rosemary, thyme, and chamomile, turning the walk into a full sensory experience.
How to get there
The easiest starting point is the parking lot of Colegio Santísimo Cristo. From there, head up the first hill towards Alcolaes and take the path to the right.
The route is mostly paved, accessible, and takes around 45 minutes to an hour. The return offers spectacular views of Montgó and the town of Gata.
If you prefer cycling, Boronat Bicicletes has everything you need to prepare the perfect ride.
A stop at Tossal del Moro
If you still have energy, you can extend your route to Tossal del Moro, a natural viewpoint from where you can see Montgó, Gata, and even the sea and Jávea bay on clear days.
A tasty break
No outing in Gata is complete without the traditional “esmorzar”. After the route, recharge with a good sandwich and a cold beer at places like Ca Martí, Bar España, or Ca Corder.
Cumbre dels Serrellars, perfect for hiking
For more mountain adventure, you can climb Cumbre dels Serrellars, a more challenging route with a guaranteed reward: panoramic views of the Marina Alta, Montgó, and the Mediterranean coast from the summit. Perfect for those who want a deeper connection with nature.
👉 In short, Font de la Mata and Gata’s trails are an invitation to disconnect, enjoy nature, and discover corners that blend history, tradition, and scenery.
