A typical thing in Gata is to walk.
Gata de Gorgos is surrounded by nature and mountains and this makes it ideal for hikers and walkers. It has a multitude of routes for all types of people, some easier and others more difficult, so you can choose depending on your level of resistance.
Today we show you a very easy route to the La Font de la Mata that you can do both on foot and by bicycle.
Origin of Font de la Mata.
The Font de la Mata in Gata is located about 3 km. of the town and it was a well that the Arabs built to be able to keep the water to irrigate the fields. From among the rocks grow some giant mastic that is possibly the oldest bushes in the Iberian Peninsula.
Before arriving, you will also find a farmhouse with an old cistern 11 meters long and with two arches on each side, which remind us of the architecture of the time when it was built, in the 19th century.
Along the way you will find a multitude of different plants and herbs such as laurel, thyme, rosemary or chamomile. So it will be a feast for your nose.
We start the route!
Leaving from the parking lot of the Santísimo Cristo School, you will start the route by going up the hill that you will see from that point towards Alcolaes. At the end of this hill, you will have to follow the path on your right.
The road is mostly paved so it will be easy to follow the route and it is easily accessible. The route can take between 45 minutes and an hour.
The easiest way to return is by the same path. On your way back, you will face the spectacular views of the Montgó Natural Park and the town of Gata.
If you do the route by bike, you can prepare everything you need at Boronat Bicicletes, where you will find everything you need to make the perfect route.
TOSSAL DEL MORO
If you want to follow the route a little longer, you can continue along the signposted path to Tossal del Moro, from where you will have spectacular views of the Montgó Mountain, Gata and even the sea as you can also see Jávea.
