Gata de Gorgos is a town that thousands of people visit year after year, thanks to its famous wicker and palm shops, it is an essential stop for many curious people who want to see this great exhibition of bags, baskets and hats displayed in windows and old doorways.

But Gata has much more to offer and you will love spending a day here. Today we tell you 5 essential things to do if you come to see us.

  • BUY IN ITS CENTENARY STORES

If there is something that fills Gata, it is its tradition, its customs and its shops, many of them more than 100 years old. Butchers, bakeries, shops, factories, bars and restaurants… They have all been passed down from generation to generation and today they are still family businesses, so experience and know-how will make the difference.

  • HAVE LUNCH, EAT OR DINNER

The town offers a wide variety of bars and restaurants where you can have a good sandwich with freshly baked bread for lunch, eat some typical tapas from the area or some oven-baked pizzas or to have for diner a good quality meat.

  • BUY A PALM HAT OR HANDBAG.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Gata had 10 hat factories, two guitar factories, seven handbag factories and one furniture factory, among many others. The entrance to the town was quite a spectacle, full of wicker shops on each side with all the bags, hats and baskets hanging in their windows or scattered around their doorways. Today it remains so, with its same essence and its same artisan products.

  1. WALK ALONG THE GORGOS RIVER

The Gorgos River is an emblem of the town and thanks to the fact that it normally does not carry water, you can go down and have a totally different perspective of it. Here you will not find cars or noise, just the river and the trees. You can sit on the grass to read in the park area, chat with your friends or prepare a picnic while listening to music… It can be a day of total disconnection and surrounded by nature.

  • VISIT THE HERMITAGE

It is believed that construction began in 1762 but was not completed until 1905. During the civil war, it was converted into a hospital. At the end of the conflict, what was damaged was rebuilt and today it keeps the image of the patron saint of the town, the Santísimo Cristo del Calvario, throughout the year and which is only transferred to the Church of San Miguel during the week of the patron saint festivities in July.

As you can see, Gata has endless beautiful corners to visit and coming to see us is a perfect plan to spend a different day when you come on vacation to La Marina Alta surrounded by nature, atmosphere, good cuisine and lots of crafts.
